Privacy Policy
Backsell · Last updated: 15 July 2026
Backsell is a macOS app that helps music streamers and DJs by generating talking points about the song currently playing. We designed it to collect as little as possible.
What we collect
Nothing. Backsell has no servers, no accounts, and no analytics. We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal data to us — because there is no “us” server in the loop. The App Store privacy label is “Data Not Collected”, and this policy is the long-form version of that label.
Where your data lives
- Settings, history, and your AI key stay on your Mac. Your AI provider key is stored in the macOS Keychain.
- Prompts and generated content are sent directly from your Mac to the AI provider you chose and configured (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, or your own endpoint). Their handling of that data is governed by their privacy policy.
- Generated content is not written to disk by default. Saving a local history is off unless you turn it on (Settings → History); even then it stays on this Mac only and is never sent anywhere. You can clear it any time.
- Song metadata lookups: to enrich “Story” mode, Backsell queries the public MusicBrainz database for basic facts (album, year) about a recognized song. A request is sent for a track only when an AI model is configured and the track isn’t already recognized as royalty-free. Each request contains only the song title and artist — no personal information, no account, no identifier. These lookups are not logged to disk (in-memory cache only, cleared when you quit) and are not sent anywhere except MusicBrainz. MusicBrainz’s handling is governed by their own policy.
Tracking
Backsell does not track you and contains no third-party tracking SDKs.
Purchases
The one-time “Backsell Pro” unlock is processed by Apple (StoreKit). We never see your payment details.
Children
Backsell is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Changes
If a future version ever changes any of the above, this policy and the App Store privacy label will be updated first.
